Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is the world’s largest independent cancer research organisation dedicated to saving lives through research, influence and information. This includes providing grant funding to UK-based researchers to discover, prevent, detect, and treat cancer. 

This CRUK virtual study tour will provide ARMA members with an opportunity to find out more about CRUK’s Research Strategy and what CRUK does to support grant applicants and grantees. It will provide an overview of CRUK’s funding process, eligibility/assessment criteria, and current funding and policy development activities, as an opportunity for research managers to feed in on active policy areas. There will also be opportunities for discussion and to ask questions. 

Members are welcome to attend any session(s) they like and all ARMA members and levels are welcome, particularly those with an interest in grant submissions and funding policy. Please submit an expression of interest (EOI) to attend. We will confirm attendance during the week of the 2nd October but are likely to accept everyone who submits an EOI. 

Programme

Session 1: Introduction to CRUK 

9.30 – 10.15am (45mins) 

The first morning session will be led by Dan Burkwood, Director of Research Operations & Communications, and Amy Bradburn, Head of Grants Management, to provide an overview of CRUK, our Research Strategy and our research funding and peer review model. The session will also include an introduction to Cancer Research Horizons, CRUK’s innovation engine built to complement our network of exceptional researchers. 

Session 2: CRUK Grants Management (pre-award) 

10.15 – 11:00 (45mins) 

The second session will give participants the opportunity to learn about the structure of funding applications, including the application submission process, what makes a successful application, eligible grant costs and information about Patient and Public Involvement in grant applications. The session will conclude with an interactive, breakout group session. 

BREAK: 11.00 – 11.10 

Session 3: CRUK Grants Management (post award) 

11.10 – 11:40 (30mins) 

The third session will be broken in two parts, firstly an introduction to CRUK’s post-award processes, including award reconciliation, and secondly an introduction to CRUK’s impact measurement and ResearchFish submission process. 

Session 4: CRUK Funding Policy, Governance and EDI 

11:40– 12:40 (60mins) 

This session will cover the following discussion topics: how CRUK is approaching Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, including positive action initiatives available to early career researchers, responsible research assessment, collaborating with other research funders to reduce bureaucracy and other hot topics and emerging funding policy areas (e.g. use of generative AI tools).  

Session 5: Q&A to Expressions of Interest 

12:40 – 13:00 (20mins) 

The final session will address questions submitted throughout the day alongside any pre-submitted questions.
