Join us for a validation workshop to discuss the interim findings of a policy analysis project, commissioned by the British Academy and conducted by Scientia Scripta. This project aims to analyse UK funder and university policies that impact equity in international research collaborations, particularly in the context of Official Development Assistance (ODA). This analysis is guided by four guidance documents:

• Four Approaches to Supporting Equitable Partnerships, which provides practical recommendations for establishing and sustaining equitable research partnerships.
• Cape Town Statement on Research Integrity, advocating for fairness and equity in research practices with 20 recommendations for stakeholders.
• Envisioning an Equitable Future for Research across the North-South Divide, a synthesis paper exploring the complexities of promoting equity in research and proposing a framework grounded in Southern priorities.
• Africa Charter for Transformative Research Collaborations, outlining principles and aspirations for transformative research collaborations to advance Africa’s role in global scientific knowledge production.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for research management professionals involved in university international collaboration or working in relevant support functions e.g. International Partnership roles, Ethics and Compliance roles, Grants and Contracts Managers, roles in Research Development (pre-award and post-award) etc. The workshop will give you an opportunity to:

• Gain Insights: on how UK funder and university policies impact equitability in international research collaborations.
• Contribute to Policy Development: provide feedback that will help shape model policies for equitable and productive research partnerships and the British Academy’s work in this area.

During the workshop, we will:

• Present preliminary findings from our review of UK funder and university policies relating to international collaboration.
• Provide an opportunity for participants to give feedback and inputs to refine our analysis and recommendations.
• Sense-check our findings against the wider sector and incorporate examples/views into the final report.

Creating a safe space

The workshop will be highly interactive. The purpose of this event is to learn from each other and for us to share our initial findings. We aim to have these discussions in a safe space, and as such:

• the event will not be recorded,
• we will not mention any of the institutions involved in our analysis at the event nor link the findings to any institution,
• we will not quote any institution or person taking part in the workshop in our report,
• we will give participants an opportunity to give their views anonymously via Padlet during the event.

Your insights and contributions will be invaluable in shaping the final report, which will include model policies to enhance equitable research collaborations.

Speakers:

• Alice Chadwick El-Ali: A research leader with a PhD in Social and Policy Sciences, Alice has designed and delivered research to influence policy makers. She currently works for the UK Collaborative on Development Research, supporting equitable partnerships with LMICs and advocating for ethical collaboration.
• Allen Mukhwana: A Senior Research Management Professional with over 20 years of experience, Allen is responsible for the Science for Africa Foundation’s work on creating conducive research environments. She has led the development of policies to mainstream equity, diversity, and inclusion in research.
• Eva Kagiri-Kalanzi: An international development expert with over 15 years of experience in research and innovation, and science policy. Eva leads Scientia Scripta’s work on science engagement, focusing on ethical and inclusive research. She has extensive experience in fostering equitable partnerships and enhancing diversity in evidence-based policymaking.
