
Professor Hugh P. McKenna CBE, PhD, B.Sc(Hons), RMN, RGN, RNT, DipN(Lond), AdvDipEd, FFN RCSI, FEANS, FRCN, FAAN, MEA, MEASA
Before retirement in 2019 Professor Hugh McKenna was Dean of Medical School Development and Pro Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation at Ulster University. He has over 250 publications, including 17 books. His research has been cited 31,500 times. He has several publications on research assessment, including a 2021 book entitled Research Impact: attainment achievement and assessment. He chaired expert panel 3 in REF2021 and chaired similar panels in 2014 and 2008. He also chaired panels in Sweden and Hong Kong. In 2024, he was appointed Vice Chair of the Alzheimer’s Society UK, named by Stanford University as one of the World’s Top 2% of scientists, appointed a member of the Hong Kong Research Assessment Exercise 2026 and became Editor in Chief of an international mental health journal. He is a member of the UK’s REF2029 Research Diversity Advisory Panel.
