The ARMA Professional Development framework is a rich resource, designed to support individuals, teams and team managers. Depending on where you are in your career journey, the Framework can be used in a variety of ways.

 

A helpful starting point is the ‘How to use’ section of the PDF, which provides an overview of the full framework, its structure and sections.

 

Individuals

Individuals: Plan your professional development in the current role
  • Identify the pathway and function most relevant to your role, using the ‘How to use’ section
  • Explore the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected from your role
  • Consult the ‘Core competencies’ page to get further insight into specialist and transferable skills
  • Reflect on what you are already doing in your role, the tasks and expectations Reflect on your strengths and areas for development
  • Consider what skills you may wish to develop, to help you thrive in your role
  • Consider ways in which you could acquire these skills and knowledge
  • Approach your line manager, to explore available CPD opportunities together
Individuals: Plan your next step within the existing function
  • Identify which pathway and function is most relevant to your role, using the ‘How to use’ section 
  • Explore the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected at your level (operational, management, or leadership) 
  • Identify the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected at the next level up, within this pathway (operational –> management; management –> leadership) 
  • Consult the ‘Core competencies’ page to get further insight into specialist and transferable skills 
  • Identify areas for development that could get you the knowledge and the skills required at the next level 
  • Consider ways in which you could acquire these skills and knowledge 
  • Approach your line manager to explore available CPD opportunities together 
Individuals: Use PDF for career development within the same pathway
  • Identify which pathway is most relevant to your role, using the ‘How to use’ section and the relevant pathway tab 
  • Explore the full range of functions within this pathway and the associated skills, knowledge and behaviours 
  • Engage with the ‘Core competencies’ section to get further insight into specialist and transferable skills that you already have, and those you wish to develop 
  • Identify areas for development to help you bridge any potential gaps  
  • You may also wish to speak to colleagues who have experience in this function 
  • Consider ways in which you could acquire these skills and knowledge 
  • Approach your line manager to explore available CPD opportunities together 
Individuals: Explore what's possible in the world of Research Management
  • It may be helpful to explore the rich diversity of functions and roles across all professional development pathways, to have good insight into what type of careers are possible 
  • Start with the ‘How to use’ page, which will provide you with the scope of the framework 
  • Identify the pathway and function that ‘hosts’ your current role 
  • Identify one or more potential career options you are curious about 
  • Explore the ‘Core competencies’ page to get further insight into specialist and transferable skills 
  • Consider which specialist and transferable skills you already have 
  • Identify areas for development, and possible ways to develop new skills 
  • Approach your line manager to explore available CPD opportunities together 

Team Managers

Team Managers: Use PDF to inform job descriptions and person specifications
  • Start with the ‘How to use’ page, which will provide you with the scope of the framework 
  • Identify the functional area and level required for the role in question 
  • Explore the core skills, knowledge and ways of demonstrating these, in this role 
  • Read through the ‘Core Competencies’ section, to consider how the technical and transferable skills for this role will be supporting and interacting with other’s skill sets 
  • Consistently using the PDF for designing job descriptions will ensure a consistent professional approach 
Team Managers: Use PDF to inform performance and career development conversations
  • Start with the ‘How to use’ page, which will provide you with the scope of the framework 
  • Identify the pathway, functional area and level most relevant to the individual’s role 
  • Reflect on the evidence of strengths and potential areas for development 
  • Identify development opportunities that will support the individual in their current role 
  • For talent development, identify gaps and development opportunities to enable career progression 
  • Encourage the individual to engage with the framework in a similar fashion, in preparation for the performance and career development conversation 
  • Together, identify most suitable and effective CPD opportunities  
Team Managers: Use PDF to guide the induction and onboarding process of new staff
  • Start with the ‘How to use’ page, which will provide you with the scope of the framework 
  • Identify the pathway, functional area and level most relevant to the individual’s role 
  • Encourage the new employee to engage with the PDF in their own time, to enable broader and deeper understanding of the sector, pathway and function that their role is associated with 
  • Use the PDF to build broader awareness of cross-function and cross-team working 
  • Embed the framework in the mentoring for onboarding process 

Teams

Teams: Use PDF to support team development and project planning
  • Consider what collective knowledge and skill sets your team / project requires 
  • Explore the scope of the PDF pathways and functions in the ‘How to use’ section 
  • Explore the ‘Core Competencies’ section for an insight into specialist and transferable skills 
  • Conduct a mapping exercise 
  • Identify team strengths, potential gaps and development opportunities 
  • Explore ARMA’s training offer in relation to your teams/projects current and future needs 
  • Create CPD plans for the team/ project 
  • Contact ARMA to discuss development and training options for your team
