Post Award

The Post-Award SIG is one of the largest Special Interest Groups in ARMA and is a platform for RMA professionals engaged in or interested in the financial and project management aspects of research and consultancy projects within higher education institutions. It is intended to provide post-award colleagues with a collaborative environment for, interacting with other likeminded professionals, exchanging best practice, seeking solutions to queries, and working together to influence policy.

We aim to support and develop the post-award research managers and administrators’ community by; 

  • Fostering sharing of best practice and knowledge exchange

  • Encouraging conversations with other professionals

  • Facilitating opportunities for networking

  • Providing best practice resources and other materials

  • Disseminating information about training and professional development opportunities

  • Advocating the views of the community and influencing policy

  • Organising events, drop-in sessions, seminars and round tables on topical issues

  • Monitoring relevant sector developments

  • Acting as a voice into the ARMA board, on behalf of the SIG members

  • Taking collective action on behalf of our members

Anish Kurien Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange, University of Cumbria

Anish is the Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Cumbria. Having worked in Research Management over the last 18 years, he has extensive experience of Research Management covering the full spectrum of; Research Delivery (post-award), Research Development (pre-award), Research Ethics and Governance, Research Systems, REF and Impact, and PGR Student Management.

Anish is also a PRINCE 2 and MSP qualified Project Manager with an MBA in Information Management.

Leila Cole, Senior Research Finance Compliance Manager, Durham University

Having worked within Research Finance for 16 years Leila specialises in Post Award Management; Financial Reporting, audit, compliance, and assurance a national and international level. She currently leads the Post Award team at Durham University.

Having also worked within Pre-Award and Research Contracting Leila is interested in how the Post Award role has developed and the benefits of collaborative working within the higher education sector.

Liam Rose, Research and Finance Manager,  Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London

Liam pro-actively oversees the Department’s research and finance operations and ensures the implementation of the Department’s research and finance strategy on a day-to-day basis. He is responsible for the efficient running of grants in the Department and undertakes all aspects of post-award oversight of research grants in liaison with Principal Investigators and Imperial College Research Services.

Prior to joining Imperial Liam led the centralised post award research support function at the University of Essex as Head of Post Award. He has over a decade of experience in research funding management and administration, including three years working in the UKRI Funding Assurance programme as a Funding Assurance Consultant, Senior Manager for Grants Operations at the Royal Society and he has worked across pre and post award for ESRC and UKRI central.

He has a particular interest in working collaboratively with other professional service colleagues and academics to develop and review robust approaches to post award grant management.

Nicola Crawley, Senior Grants Manager, Wellcome Sanger Institute

Having started her career in Grant Management over 18 years ago, Nicola currently supports the Head of Grants at the Wellcome Sanger Institute with the delivery of business of the Grants Office and its development and has built up extensive knowledge and skills in this profession.

With a wealth of experience across Pre Award, Research Contracts and Post Award, she specialises in Post Award Grant Management and is passionate about continuous improvement, connecting the sector by fostering inclusive discussions, sharing best practices and knowledge and implementing new and improved ways of working.
