From April 2026, significant national changes have come into effect that will reshape how clinical research is set up and delivered across the NHS. These reforms aim to position the UK as one of the best places in the world to undertake high‑quality clinical research, while continuing to ensure robust protections for patients and research participants.

Key changes include the introduction of the NIHR 150‑day study set‑up metric, the implementation of the updated International Council for Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP E6(R3)), and the new UK Clinical Trials Regulations, which came into force on 28 April 2026.
