Why learn coaching skills?
As research managers, a key aspect of your role is providing expert consultancy to researchers. A coaching approach is a highly effective way to have a productive conversation and provide support to your academic ‘clients’. Using coaching techniques, will better enable you to:
- Ask excellent questions to evaluate proposals, and to gather the most impactful information about the research and research team,
- Provide coaching to enable new and existing research teams to work more effectively together and plan effective working practices.
- Help researchers to fully explore and think through all aspects of their grant applications.
- Support researchers in their preparation for panel interviews
- Better understand the needs of researchers so that you can be more targeted in how you work with them.
- Gauge the appropriate level of support and challenge that they need in order to become more self-sufficient in managing their applications, grants and collaborations.
