Earlier this year, a group of ARMA members took part in a workshop as part of a Wellcome-funded project to identify ways to create greater transparency and openness within the pre-award part of the grant-awarding system, and to explore concrete ways EDI can be improved in pre-award processes.

We had a wonderful response from you, and convened the workshop in November. We’ll be feeding its findings into a symposium to be held in January and then we’re keen to come back to ARMA with a webinar to update you as we develop the project’s final outputs and recommendations.

We’re planning for a highly interactive one-hour session, and very much look forward to seeing you there!

The Elizabeth Blackwell Institute at the University of Bristol is leading a project, funded by Wellcome’s Institutional Strategic Support Fund, to identify ways to create greater transparency within the system, and to explore concrete ways EDI can be improved in pre-award processes.

Structured around the themes and priorities that emerge in the course of the project, the symposium will provide an opportunity for attendees to share their own findings and experiences in the funding application process, and to identify additional areas for future investigation. The goals for the event are to: shed light on often-hidden decision points in pre-award processes; deepen our shared understanding of mechanisms of exclusion; highlight existing good practices in tackling these issues; and propose concrete actions that should be taken to improve openness and EDI.

The outcomes of these discussions will be summarised in a report or white paper outlining the nature and extent of the issues uncovered, and making actionable recommendations for how to mitigate or ameliorate them. This will be shared with symposium participants for review, and published with all symposium participants as co-authors.
