Internal Research Funding Schemes: Designing, Delivering and Demonstrating Impact

Tuesday 17 November, 10:00 – 15:30

Highfield House, University Park Campus, University of Nottingham, NG7 2RD

Hosted by the ARMA Research Development SIG.

Internal research funding schemes play an important role in supporting research and knowledge exchange, enabling institutions to develop new ideas, foster collaborations, support researcher development, generate impact, and create opportunities that may lead to larger externally funded projects.

As institutions face increasing pressure to demonstrate strategic value and make effective use of limited resources, there is growing interest in how internal funding schemes are designed, delivered, governed, and evaluated. While many organisations face similar challenges, there are relatively few opportunities for colleagues to come together and discuss approaches, share experiences, and learn from one another.

This workshop will bring together colleagues from across the UK higher education sector and beyond, to explore current practice in internal research funding. Through a combination of case studies, facilitated discussions and networking opportunities, participants will be able to compare different approaches, discuss common challenges, and exchange practical solutions with peers.

Attendance is free, but participants will be required to cover their own travel costs.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore how institutions make the case for internal funding and demonstrate strategic value and return on investment.
  • Compare different funding models and consider the lessons learned from their implementation and evolution.
  • Share approaches to governance, assessment, administration, and conflict management.
  • Discuss methods for monitoring outcomes and evidencing impact, including longer-term and less tangible benefits.
  • Exchange practical insights on operational challenges, resource requirements, and process improvement.
  • Develop a broader understanding of current and emerging practice across the sector.
  • Build networks with colleagues involved in the design, delivery, and evaluation of internal funding schemes.
