Event Details

This technical workshop will provide information, advice, guidance and examples of good practice on improving the quality of research proposals. We will look at mechanisms for providing support for proposal writing, feedback on draft proposals, facilitation of internal review, and an understanding of how funders make decisions. This workshop is for research managers and administrators who play a key role in helping academics to raise the quality of their research proposals.

Research funding is much more likely to be secured when the quality of the research application is demonstrable. Additionally Research Councils and other funders are increasingly urging universities to submit fewer research proposals of higher quality, with sanctions being put in place for those that don’t comply!

This workshop will be delivered via a combination of case studies (pre-recorded), a practical exercise and group discussion (small groups and whole group).

By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Understand why raising the quality of research proposals is important
  • Appreciate the roles that the academic, research manager and administrator, and the institution play in the process
  • Have knowledge of several different approaches to proposal development, internal peer review and feedback
  • Have had the opportunity to discuss challenges and issues in their own institutional practice

Target Audience

This workshop is aimed at research managers and administrators who support the development of research proposals at either central or departmental / faculty level.
