Event Details

This technical workshop is for research managers and administrators with at least 2 years of research support experience who play a key role in helping academics to prepare and submit high quality research proposals and are looking to expand their knowledge and gain some additional information on how to support their academics through different routes and mechanisms.  We will provide information, advice, guidance, and examples of good practice on improving the quality of research proposals. We will look at mechanisms for providing support for proposal writing, providing feedback on draft proposals, facilitation of internal review, and an understanding of how funders make decisions.

The workshop consists of two parts delivered through a combination of presentations, case studies and discussion.  Prior to the workshop, pre-recorded case studies from your presenters will be shared with you to view.  The case studies discuss various activities or approaches that have been used at our institutions to help raise the quality of research proposals. It is critical that participants ensure sufficient time to engage with the pre-recorded content prior to attending the interactive webinar. The second part of the workshop takes the form of an interactive webinar consisting of presentations, facilitated breakout sessions and a whole group exercise.  Participants will be given the opportunity to explore and discuss challenges and solutions in relation to their own institutional practice.

By the end of the workshop, participants should:

  • Understand the drivers for raising the quality of research proposals
  • Have knowledge of several different ways in which raising the quality of research proposals can be achieved
  • Appreciate the different roles that the academic, research manager and administrator, and the institution can play in the process
  • Have had the opportunity to discuss common challenges with colleagues from other institutions, and learn from common experiences and challenges.

Target Audience

This workshop is aimed at pre-award research managers and administrators who support the development of research proposals at either central or departmental / faculty level and have at least 2 years of sector experience.
