ARMA RD SIG Drop-in Session:
What has strategy got to do with research development?
Speaker: Dr Sharron Pleydell-Pearce, Head of Strategic Research Development Team, Oxford University
Moderator: Dr Aygen Kurt-Dickson, ARMA RD SIG co-Champion
Friday, 3 November 2023, 12:00-13:00
Research development professionals have been increasingly expected to upskill to engage with the overall funding landscape, conduct horizons scanning, and craft future scenarios to be able to support their organisations more effectively. This may mean that they would need to go beyond their “grant support” boxes, and spend time in investigating the contexts they are working in. This requires strategic thinking as well as being able to grasp, contribute and shape institutional, national, and funding body strategies. Within the last few years, we have started seeing more formal combinations of strategy and research development in team structures in UK HEIs, and Oxford University is one of the pioneers. In a conversational style we will unpack the correlation between strategy and research development, and hear about the speaker’s and other participants’ thoughts on challenges and opportunities.
