In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of Higher Education Institutions and leaders making declarations and commitments to become more diverse and inclusive.  This, after decades of data collection, scholarly research, student protests, activism and policy interventions, to name a few.

So, why is it then one might ask, that ‘the elephant in the room’ which now appears to have grown even larger, has become more opaque than ever before?  So much so, that people will go to extreme lengths in order to avoid acknowledging its very existence as a supposed fearsome ‘creature’, let alone, actually being in the same room with it.

During this session we will have a small panel of guest speakers, who will be invited to share a brief ‘provocation’ reflecting their lived experiences and perspectives on the session title.  Followed by a Questions and Answer session and an open discussion.

We want you to use this as an opportunity to have an honest, safe and authentic discussion framed around the various rhetoric, good intentions, misinformation and disinformation around efforts being made towards achieving a more inclusive Higher Education sector.  Against the conflict with the reality of individual and collective lived experiences of those who are minoritised, underrepresented and excluded.

We hope that everyone attending and participating in this session will leave it, feeling more informed, engaged and motivated to do something positive towards meaningful understanding, acceptance and of course, change.
