To help answer some of the most frequently asked questions, we spoke to Dr Francesco Paradiso, Strategic Research Development Manager and graduate of the Certificate in Research Management Advanced (CRMA), about his experiences and advice for those considering enrolling.

“I found the qualification programme very flexible and was able to fit my study hours within my work schedule. Realistically speaking, you do need to dedicate some additional time to your studies, but it is absolutely worth it. The ARMA Qualifications Team is also very supportive and will help you find the pace and approach that works best for you.”

When asked whether the qualification delivers value for money, Francesco’s answer was unequivocal.

“Definitely. There are not many formal opportunities to learn about research management and administration, particularly if you are new to the profession. The qualification provides a solid foundation on which to build your knowledge.”

He also highlights the breadth of learning available through the programme.

“You gain insight into aspects of the profession that might otherwise remain hidden, while also learning about different roles and connecting with colleagues across the sector.”

Securing support from your employer

Many prospective students wonder whether their organisation will support them through the programme.

Francesco recommends starting the conversation with your line manager and discussing how the qualification can benefit both your own development and your organisation.

“Your studies will benefit your career, but they will also benefit your employer by ensuring staff remain up to date with developments across the sector. It’s a win-win situation.”

He notes that many employers have professional development budgets and may be able to provide funding, study time, or other forms of support to help learners successfully complete the qualification.

How much study time is needed?

The amount of time required will vary depending on individual learning styles, experience and personal commitments. However, Francesco believes the workload is manageable with consistent effort.

“In my experience, an average of three to five hours per week can be enough to be productive and maintain the right pace.”

This makes the qualification an achievable option for busy professionals looking to develop their skills while continuing in full-time employment.
