We are proud to announce the relaunch of the Professional Development Framework (PDF). This refreshed framework reflects the evolution of the research sector and reaffirms ARMA’s commitment to supporting career development, resource planning, and sector-wide excellence.
A framework built on collaboration and insight
Initially shaped by the input of over 100 research management professionals and partner organisations, the PDF was designed to:
- Enable structured professional development for research managers and administrators
- Support individuals in reflecting on their career goals and development needs
- Guide institutions in designing training programmes and job descriptions.
Over the years, the framework has undergone several reviews to ensure its continued relevance. The latest refresh, spanning 2024 – 2025, is the most comprehensive yet.
An in-depth, member-led review, overseen by ARMA’s Professional Development Committee, identified the need for both content and format updates. ARMA procured AHEP consulting to lead this work and the result is a more integrated, accessible and forward-looking tool that will align with all ARMA professional development activities.
Responding to a changing landscape
The updated framework addresses significant sectoral shifts, including:
- Advances in artificial intelligence and digital technologies
- Greater emphasis on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)
- The rise of responsible and trusted research practices
- A renewed focus on sustainability and healthy research cultures
- The transformation of research-enabling roles and functions.
A tool for every stage of the research enabling journey
The refreshed PDF supports professionals at operational, management and leadership levels across seven key pathways:
- Research strategy and planning
- Research funding and development
- Research impact and engagement
- Research governance and compliance
- Researcher culture and development
- Research systems and technology
- Research projects and income
Each pathway breaks down into specific functions, with detailed guidance on core skills, underpinning knowledge, and professional behaviours. The tool is designed to help individuals map their career progression, reflect on their competencies and understand the interconnectivity of research-enabling roles. The usability of the framework has been strengthened further by introducing the ‘transferable skills’ and ‘how to use’ sections, to encourage broader use.

The new interactive professional development framework includes guidance on how to approach professional development conversations at both a team and individual level and is now live and can be accessed at Professional Development Framework.
Looking ahead
Further updates are on the horizon, including FAQs on how the framework aligns with the EU roadmap and other sectoral frameworks. Each pathway and function will also include links to relevant training opportunities or special interest groups that we offer in that area.
