Applications open for the next cohort of ARMA’s peer-led leadership development programme.
Now entering its second cohort, ARMA’s Mastermind Programme is a core part of our leadership offer, giving new and established research management leaders a trusted space to connect, share experience and solutions, and support one another through the realities of research leadership.
About the programme
Are you a research management leader looking for a trusted network to share insight, navigate challenges and develop practical solutions with peers? ARMA’s Mastermind Programme brings research leaders together in a trusted, confidential space to share experiences, tackle challenges and support each other’s professional growth.
Following the success of the first cohort, we are now inviting applications for the next round. The pilot programme showed how valuable it can be for leaders to have a safe, structured space to test ideas, explore shared challenges and draw confidence from the experiences of others.
Why join?
Participants in the first cohort told us that the programme helped them build new networks, feel reassured by shared experiences and discuss sector-wide change and leadership challenges with people who understood their context. The evaluation also highlighted benefits around improved confidence, empowerment and feeling less isolated in senior roles. They stated If you are thinking, ‘I’m not sure I’m ready for this programme then it is likely that this is exactly the programme you need’. All the original cohort stated that they would recommend the programme to colleagues.
The programme is designed to help you:
- Connect with peers in similar leadership roles across the research management community
- Discuss leadership challenges, sector pressures and practical approaches to change
- Share experience, resources and insight in a confidential environment
- Develop confidence, clarity and accountability around your personal and professional goals
- Contribute to a leadership community that helps shape ARMA’s wider support for research leaders.
Who is it for?
The Mastermind Programme is aimed at senior research management professionals, particularly those who are new to leadership roles, have recently moved into a new institutional context, or would value a trusted peer network to support their leadership practice. You do not need to have all the answers. The value of the programme comes from honest discussion, shared learning and the willingness to contribute to the development of others, as well as your own.
How it works
A cohort of up to 12 research leaders will be selected through a review of application forms, with the aim of bringing together a range of institutions, backgrounds, experiences and roles.
The programme will be co-created by members and designed around the priorities and needs of the cohort, so that each session responds to the issues that matter most to participants.
ARMA’s Mastermind Programme will be free for ARMA members and will run online over six sessions. The first session will be professionally facilitated by Jo Cresswell who will help set expectations, establish ground rules and support the group to build trust from the outset.
Programme structure
- Six online sessions, with dates confirmed in advance
- A professionally facilitated first session to set expectations and establish shared principles
- Self-organisation by group members after the first session, including agreed topics and shared responsibility for chairing discussions
- Midway and final check-ins with a professional facilitator to ensure the programme remains aligned with members’ needs and to support evaluation
- A dedicated Teams space provided by ARMA, allowing members to stay connected between sessions.
What will sessions cover?
Members will co-design the content and structure of the sessions. Meetings may focus on pre-agreed themes, open discussion of current challenges, or a combination of both, depending on the priorities of the group.
Topics may include:
- Leadership in a changing research environment
- Common sector themes, including REF and institutional change
- Collaboration, influence and stakeholder engagement
- Problem-solving and developing new ways of working
- Personal development, resilience and wellbeing
- Supporting accountability for leadership goals and priorities

Apply by completing the application form by Friday 11 September. The first session will take place online on Wednesday 14 October from 12pm-2pm,

- 24 February 2027
- 23 March 2027
Please only apply if you are able to attend the first session, as this will help the group establish shared expectations and build a strong foundation for the programme.
