medical and Health Services SIG relaunch and Hello!

Dear All,

I hope this email finds you all very well.

As you may have seen in the ARMA newsletter circulated this today, I will be taking over as champion for the SIG, and would like to introduce myself!

I am currently a Research Ethics and Governance Manager at Manchester Metropolitan University. Whilst my role largely involves ensuring compliance with the Concordat for Research Integrity, I also act on behalf of the University Sponsor for all research submitted via the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) both before application submission (at some points from the bid stage), and until the research is complete. I am also a registered nurse with a Master’s degree in Health Research. I have worked as a research nurse on international CTIMPs, as well as coordinating RCTs and CTIMPs within a Registered Clinical Trials Unit.

As the SIG has been inactive for a little while, I’m really keen to hear from you all about how you’d like to see the SIG network/community develop. Therefore, I’d really value any comments you have on:
• What would be useful to you?
• What wouldn’t be useful?
• What are your priorities?
• What I can develop or help you develop that might not get in your home institutions?

From a wider ARMA perspective, September saw the launch of the new website. In order to access most of the new resources, you will have been invited to reactivate your membership, in order to access your dashboard, update your profile and starting to connect with ARMA colleagues. If you have done so, I hope you are enjoying having a play, and familiarising yourself with the new features!

Once you are logged in, click on ‘network’, then ‘Special Interest Groups’; then the Medical and Health Services ‘SIG Discussion Group’. Here you will be able to share best practice, any information you feel would be useful to the SIG, and obtain feedback from fellow members of the SIG. If you click on the ‘subscribe’ link at the top of the SIG group page, you will receive a notification of new questions that have been added to the discussion group. The JISC mail-list for this group is still active, however the new discussion page will keep all the information posted, and all the responses related to it in one page, which is really useful instead of having to search through your emails! I’d really welcome feedback on how SIG members would like to use the different communication formats now available to us.

Hello Alison, and Joe,

I too am looking forward to participating in this SIG and contributing to its growth. Just a brief introduction: I work for a Research Support Service in London that represents seven NHS trusts, and mental health primary care research in the central, north, and East London region. I am the sponsorship manager which means I am the sponsor representative for all of our NHS trusts, and manage the growing sponsor function and team.

One of my areas of focus for next year will be engaging front line clinical staff (nurses, care coordinators etc.) so that they can become more invested (therefore supportive of) research and recognise the contribution they can bring to. The hope is that they will become more motivated to actually initiate their own research and at the very least have more confidence in expressing interest in being P.I.’s and working more with the R&D office to contribute that invaluable intelligence they have to inform the feasibility of proposed research. I would like for NHS clinical staff to have more of that enterprising research spirit that can be found in HEI, and to be recognised for their contributions accordingly :0).
