Systems for Ethical Review – Live Interactive Webinar

Event Details

This webinar should be of interest to people involved in establishing and maintaining systems for ethics review of research within organisations – most notably HEIs. The first session will focus on the scope of RECs. The remit of RECs in Universities varies considerably, from those that only review research, following relatively narrow definitions, to those that consider almost any activity raising matters of ethics. A second session will explore the various structures and systems required to accommodate wide-ranging ethics review. These extend from a single ethics committee to more complex arrangements of university, faculty and departmental committees. It is recognised that ethical review should be proportionate and the webinar will include discussion of ‘fast-track’ (often online) compared with a full review by full, quorate committee. The typical front-loaded, linear approach to review will be challenged – the popular idea of ‘ethics’ being the final, single, hurdle to be surmounted before research begins will be critically evaluated.

Participants will gain:

  • an understanding of the remits of RECs
  • an understanding of a range of systems for ethics review of research
  • tools to differentiate research proposals in terms of level of ethics review
  • critically examine institutional frameworks for research ethics and governance
