Sometimes it feels as if we don’t even have time to breathe. With the huge expansion in the remit and range of research management, and the subsequent increase in our workloads, finding time to take on any additional tasks feels insurmountable. So why add to your in-tray by agreeing to write for ARMA Insights?
For me, I think there are six potential benefits:
- It raises your profile both within and beyond your university. You’re doing great work, and developing a profile as someone who is an expert in the field is great recognition of this.
- It helps you to develop a personal network, either within your field or those close to it. Having a personal network will help when you have specific questions or issues you need to resolve. It will also help to open doors when you approach funders, policy-makers and other colleagues.
- It allows you to share – and gain! – knowledge. Equally, it’s invaluable for you to share your knowledge for the benefit of others. Colleagues can learn from your experience, and will be eternally grateful if you give them the chance to do so.
- It enables you to be part of national debates. As well as your own network, you can have a clear and public position, whether that be on long-form outputs to the REF, the increasing use of large strategic calls by UKRI, visa restrictions or any of the other issues we’re grappling with. It’s also a chance to vent.
- It bolsters your CV. It’s great to have a ‘publications’ section of your CV: it shows your engagement, national profile, and wider interests, which will be a significant help when you’re applying for other jobs, which sometimes have ‘national profile’ as a desirable criterion.
- And hell, it’s enjoyable too. I’ve enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction that comes with writing. It’s a challenge to clarify and communicate my thinking, but hugely satisfying when I’ve been able to do so.
Six reasons to write, six benefits to you and the sector.
