News round-up: October 2025

October’s research policy announcements signify major transformations in the UK’s Research and Innovation environment. This summary provides details of each announcement, as well as gesturing to what might be at stake.

Since October 2022, Rupert Avis has been employed as Research Support Officer by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he supports internal and external funding applications, curates a series of researcher development sessions, and helps refine internal management processes through his roles as secretary of the Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee and administrator of the Research Ethics Committee. He completed ARMA’s Certificate in Research Management (Advanced) in 2024, and, following this, became a member of ARMA’s Editorial Working Group and ARMA’s Qualifications Working Group. As a researcher, he is finalising his first monograph for Routledge, has published on music education and Indian film music, and serves as Book Review Editor for Music Education Research and Associate Editor for The Journal of Music, Technology and Education. He also works as a consultant for the University of Birmingham’s International Development Department, publishing rapid literature reviews on topics ranging from air pollution in North Macedonia to the social impacts of China’s approach to development. Rupert is a British citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India.
