Behind the scenes: Research and research management within the UK’s cultural and heritage institutions

Jo Byrne is Head of Research Development for Historic England. Her role provides leadership in research strategy and governance, external research collaboration, funding and delivery, and post-graduate programmes. Jo’s career has spanned local and national public service, higher education and the non-profit sector, with responsibilities including advice, policy, outreach, partnerships, research and research management.

Matt Thompson is Conservation, Curatorial and Learning Director with English Heritage. He has a background in archaeology and the museums and heritage sector. He is currently co-Chair of the Independent Research Organisations Consortium.

JD Hill has been Head of Research at the British Museum since 2006. He has been active in supporting research and research management across the independent research organisations and led the consortium of cultural organisations that support AHRC funded Collaborative Doctoral Partnership studentships for many years.
