Recent graduate, Aden Kwok, shares his experience of participating in ARMA’s Qualification Programme.
Completing the Certificate in Research Management: Foundation has been a highly beneficial step in my career, helping me progress from a data-focused role into a broader research support and facilitation position, and enabling me to contribute more effectively to the professional services team. The course provided a clear understanding of the complexities within the wider research ecosystem, which gave me the confidence to take on more senior, strategic responsibilities.
The programme was particularly helpful in deepening my knowledge of core areas like research governance, ethics, and Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE). This knowledge has shifted my perspective from merely managing data to actively facilitating the research process, ensuring that support structures are aligned with institutional policy and regulatory standards.
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the six assignments, which encouraged me to speak with colleagues across different teams. This helped me see the bigger picture of how my organisation works and allowed me to grow my professional network. While I focused my assignments on examples from within my own institution, the course also gave me a much clearer view of the wider Higher Education landscape across the UK. This broader context has been incredibly useful in my day-to-day work. I would highly recommend this programme to anyone in an operational role or looking to move into a more strategic role, as it offers the essential knowledge and practical understanding needed to support research effectively.
