In this session, you will learn how to access and analyse the three RAAAP datasets that are the results of international surveys (2016, 2019, and 2022) of research managers and administrators (RMAs).

RAAAP-1 had 2,691 responses from 64 countries, RAAAP-2 elicited 4,324 responses from 74 countries, and the most recent (2022) RAAAP-3 had 5,076 from 66 countries.  These included 453, 525, and 476, respectively, from the UK.

In this session, we will show you how to find, download, and analyse the data.  You should be able to mimic our demonstration as we guide you through the process with some Excel based examples.

At the end of the session, you will have an insight into these rich datasets and be able to construct queries, and understand the limitations of the data in order that your analyses are robust.  You will then have access to a vast array of data and analyses that can give you an evidence base for your decision-making in a variety of research management scenarios.

Presenter Bios

Simon Kerridge, Founder and Principal Consultant, Kerridge Research Consulting, UK

Simon is Founder of Kerridge Research Consulting and honorary staff at the University of Kent, with over 30 years’ experience as an RMA and has a passion for the profession. He is a past chair of the UK association of research managers and administrators (ARMA), serves on the board of the European association (EARMA), and has previously held committee positions for NCURA. Simon has led the various RAAAP projects and was given the 2022 Innovation Award from CARA the Canadian Association of Research Administrators for his leadership on RAAAP.  He is managing editor for JoRMA the Journal of Research Management and Administration, holds a professional doctorate in electronic research administration, and has taught on the Johns Hopkins’ masters in research administration. He is also co-chair of the NISO Standing Committee for CRediT the contributor role taxonomy for journal article authorship, was an author of the Metric Tide report, and is co-editor of the book – The Emerald handbook of Research Management and Administration around the World.

Madhuri Dutta, Head, Centre for Operational and Research Excellence, CORE India, George Institute for Global Health, India

Madhuri has over 14 years’ experience as an RMA and currently heads research operations at the George Institute for Global Health in India. Madhuri started her career as a grants adviser in a funding organization in 2010 and moved on to pre-awards grants management in an Indian public health research institute in 2013. Since then, she has diversified her portfolio to research operations and currently her team supports researchers across grants management, data management, statistics, project operations, capacity building activities and quality assurance. She is a fellow of the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Research Management Initiative (IRMI) and member of IRMI Professional Development Committee, in addition to being a Co-PI of the RAAAP-3 project. Madhuri holds a Doctorate degree in Biochemistry and is an adjunct faculty at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal University.

Melinda Fischer, Senior Research Administrator, Clemson University, SC, USA

Melinda has worked in research administration since 2009 at Clemson University, in South Carolina, U.S. Beginning her research administration journey in post-award, she transitioned to pre-award in 2013. She currently supports the College of Education as the Manager of the Office of Research Services. At Clemson University, Melinda is serving as Immediate Past President of the Staff Senate. Professionally, Melinda has served as the NCURA Region III Philanthropy Coordinator, and the Sponsorship Coordinator, Global Track Lead for the 2021 NCURA PRA Conference and 2025 FRA Conference, and Program Committee Member for NCURA Region III 2021 Regional Conference. She is Co-PI of the RAAAP-3 Project, and PI of the NCURA funded RAPIDS project, focused on creating a professional identity values scale for Research Administrators. Melinda served as the North American editor of the recently released (Nov. 2023) book The Emerald Handbook of Research Management and Administration around the World and currently serves as an editor for JoRMA the Journal of Research Management and Administration.

Cristina Oliveira, Executive Manager of the Information Management Research Center (MagIC), NOVA IMS, Portugal

Cristina has over 15 years of experience as a Research Manager and Administrator. She has played a crucial role in developing PIC, the Portuguese association for Professionals at the Interface of Science. Currently, she leads the research management at the MagIC research center at NOVA IMS in Portugal. Her expertise spans science policy, post-award management, and science communication, with the past 10 years focused on funding advisory and supporting researchers in the ideation and submission of research proposals.

Cristina was a partner in the EU foRMAtion project, where she led the development of RMA training modules for undergraduate students. She is also involved in the new EU-funded RM ROADMAP project, developing a roadmap for the Research Management profession across Europe. Additionally, she serves as Co-PI of the RAAAP-3 project and vice-chair of the BESTPRAC – EARMA Thematic Group. Cristina is also an author in The Emerald Handbook of Research Management and Administration around the World.
