Event Details
This interactive session is designed for professionals in research management and administration seeking a comprehensive introduction to the Research Excellence Framework 2029.
With institutions gearing up their preparations for REF 2029, this timely event will provide a strong grounding on the fundamentals and practicalities of REF. It will cover the constituent elements that make up a REF submission both at Institutional and discipline level, highlight significant policy changes to REF 2029, demystify how submissions are assessed post-submission, and lastly highlight the financial impact that the assessment outcomes have. The session will consist of a mix of practical engagement, taught components, group work and Q&As. Participants will benefit from the added value and unique perspectives the facilitators bring with their experience at institutional level as well at national panel assessment.
By the end of this session, participants will have:
- Gained a foundational understanding of the Research Excellence Framework, with a strong focus on the key policy changes for REF 2029.
- Developed an awareness of the different contributions and roles that are required during the preparation and assessment of REF submissions.
- Understand different approaches institutions take to govern their submissions.
- Discovered ways to manage workload and time management tips.
- Built confidence in knowing how and when individuals can contribute to the exercise.
- Gained knowledge from colleagues with first-hand experience of managing institutional REF returns, and the processes involved in assessment by the REF sub-panels.

Target Audience
This session is suitable for anyone involved in research management and administration, including both professional services staff and academic personnel. It is designed for individuals with little to basic knowledge of REF. Individuals new to REF specific roles are welcome as well as those who are involved in broader research management looking for a greater understanding of REF and how they might be involved.
Prior Knowledge Required
No specific prior knowledge of REF is necessary. The session will cover fundamentals ensuring that it is suitable for participants with little to no knowledge.
